Jumping dogs

We have all had it happen to us. You get ready to go out, put on your best outfit and then in run’s Fido with muddy paws and jumps all over you. Many of our clients ask us for a solution, so here it is.

  • Think about the situations you know your dog will jump on you
  • get an assistant and set up the situation. For instance if your dog jumps on every visitor, have you assistant knock on the door.
  • then before opening the door put your dog on lead and hold it very tight and short
  • have your assistant come in but make sure your dog is NOT able to jump.
  • have the assistant just stand there with their arms held behind their back. Don’t touch the dog even to push it down, any touching of the dog will be seen as a reward by the dog. Then tell your dog to ‘sit’.
  • When the dog is clam and sitting, the assistant should then pat the dog and even give them a treat.

Simple. The idea is that you are rewarding the behaviour that YOU prefer. If your dog stubborn or forgets simply do it over again.
