Last month we shared some of our family’s favourite holiday and daytrip spots across Regional Victoria, places we’ve been eyeing ourselves for a long-awaited break to recharge our batteries post-lockdown! Now, with the tumultuous, unexpected and testing year of 2020 finally coming to an end, we’re looking closer to home… Melbourne, our elegant, artsy and “four seasons in one day” city on the bay has been slowly returning to its usual vibrant self over the past few weeks. So, what better way to support local businesses and celebrate a relatively normal Christmas than by checking out these well-known spots. Whether you’re seeking a night away or you’d just like a fun daytrip into the centre of town, here’s five places across Metropolitan Melbourne we both love and highly recommend : )
Soaring 91 floors above the bustling streets of Metropolitan Melbourne, the Eureka Tower opened in 2006 is one of this city’s landmark buildings and arguably the best vantage point in town. Nestled on the 88th and 89th floors, Eureka Skydeck is both a traditional observation deck (and a great one at that!) and a sky high restaurant serving gourmet cuisine with stunning sunsets as a side. We particularly love going there at dusk and patiently watching the bright city lights come to life below.

MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground)
As anyone who knows a thing or two about Melbourne and Australian culture in general, AFL (‘Aussie Rules’) football is a religion down here and the MCG (or “the G” for short) is its spiritual home. In more normal times, the G will be buzzing all year round from the roar of fans who pack its stands for the AFL season, Cricket matches and even musical concerts. Guided tours of its hallowed turf and stands are also held, however for the time being going for a leisurely walk around its perimeter is a great way to soak up its scale and sense of importance to this city!

- Distance from Flinders Street Station: 1.3 KM (16 minute walk)

Unlike many cities, Melbourne has over recent decades turned its once dirty, shady laneways into exciting places packed full of cosy little bars and cafes, not to mention some seriously impressive street art (hello Hosier Lane). From the European inspired Degraves Street and Centre Place, bustling Hardware Lane to the more grungy AC/DC Lane and Tattersalls Lane, one of our favourite activities when in town is to simply roam through the city’s wonderful web of laneways, keeping an eye out for cool new venues that have opened and new street art pieces. It’s also a free activity open to the public 24/7!
Queen VIC Market
Melbourne is well known worldwide as a premier foodie destination, and Queen Victoria Market (‘Queen VIC’ for short) is where many of the city’s finest chefs and restaurateurs source their fresh produce. Open all year round 7 days/week, Queen VIC Market is also a great place to visit for various bric-a-brac, books, clothes (including a great selection of local designers and secondhand wares), arts & crafts and local souvenirs. We also love the cosy atmosphere of the Winter Night Markets (held every Wednesday June to August) and balmy vibes of their Summer Night Market – set to return in 2021 : )

Werribee Open Range Zoo
A bit further out of town compared to our other favourite spots, Werribee Open Range Zoo sits on the edge of Metro Melbourne and offers a family-oriented, African inspired safari experience! Featuring a wide range of exotic, wild animals including lions, tigers, to hippos, elephants and beyond – this zoo is one of our family’s favourite spots for a fun day admiring the other great creatures of the animal kingdom. It’s also right next door to the delightful Werribee Park and Mansion, which feels like it’s in the middle of rural England!
